Peer Support
Peer support occurs when someone with a history of mental health or substance use challenges uses their lived experiences to support another individual struggling with similar issues. Peer support is unique in that the traditional hierarchy between the “helping professional” and the “patient” is broken down. Peer support comes from a framework of mutuality and equality.
Peer support specialists are uniquely equipped to support peers, because they have firsthand knowledge of what it’s like to struggle with a specific challenge or diagnosis, and they understand what it takes to attain recovery. This personal connection can lead to deep understanding and empathy, in addition to many practical suggestions that support recovery.
ISDE
Individual Skill Development and Enhancement (ISDE) is a service that provides skill training to participants. These trainings can be provided one-on-one or in a group setting. Examples of areas of focus include communication, interpersonal skills, problem solving, decision-making, self-regulation, and conflict resolution. ISDE may also focus on assisting participants with strengthening their daily living skills in areas such as personal care, household tasks, financial management, transportation, shopping, parenting, accessing community resources, and so on.
Psychoeducation
Psychoeducation is a service that can be provided to individuals and/or family members. The goal of psychoeducation is to provide education, information, and resources that lead to greater understanding of and ability to manage a mental health or substance use issue. Psychoeducation often includes education about diagnoses, symptoms, and treatment options; assistance with coping skills and self-advocacy; and emotional support.
It is important to note that psychoeducation is not the same as psychotherapy. Psychoeducation focuses on learning, problem-solving, and developing skills, while psychotherapy is a space for processing emotions, treating trauma, and so on. When providing psychoeducation, I like to incorporate different mediums such as worksheets, infographics, workbooks, videos, and reading recommendations.
